BRAND STRATEGY & IDENTITY • LOGO MARK • PRODUCT DESIGN • WEBSITE DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT
Working with author Zenda Walker through the Reedsy platform, we helped bring her vision for “Zara’s Wash Day” to life—a children’s book celebrating African American hair culture, identity, and heritage. Through extensive brand strategy sessions, we explored the educational mission behind the project and its focus on highlighting non-Western beauty standards through storytelling and design.
The book was designed to reflect the beauty and cultural significance of African hairstyles while educating readers on their origins throughout Africa. Textile-inspired patterns, African crests, and carefully selected typography were incorporated throughout the covers and interior layouts to create a cohesive visual experience rooted in culture and education. Educational vocabulary sections added another layer of learning for children and families.
Beyond the book, we collaborated with Zenda on a broader brand ecosystem including a custom logo mark, website design, DEIB-focused educational content, and supporting products such as tote bags, bookmarks, coloring books, and curated VIP boxes—all designed to create a unified brand experience centered around culture, representation, and storytelling.
Every design decision was made to create a welcoming and informative digital environment that reflected the brand’s focus on culture, identity, inclusion, and storytelling.
As the Know Your Hairitage brand expanded, we extended the visual identity into a website experience focused on education, representation, and community engagement. The site highlighted DEIB initiatives including educational workshops, corporate training, resources, and culturally focused content aligned with the brand’s mission.
The website carried over the textile-inspired patterns, color palette, and custom typography developed during the branding process. African-inspired pattern banners and graphic elements were integrated throughout the site to create a cohesive and culturally grounded experience.
